What we do

We are able to assess, diagnose and provide advice and therapy for children aged between 1-16 years.

We provide therapy for a number of communication difficulties including:

This is not an exhaustive list. Please contact us if you have concerns about a condition not listed above.

Assessment:

For young children, assessment usually involves gaining a picture of your child’s communication skills through observation, play and discussion. Formal assessments are sometimes carried out, although this is not appropriate for all children.

For older children, a range a formal assessments may be used. It may also be beneficial for us to observe them in school, or liaise closely with their teacher, as communication skills can be closely linked to educational achievement.

Parents are an important part of the assessment session and a case history is always taken to obtain a picture of your child’s development and communication.

Assessment will include a written report, verbal/written advice and/or activities.

Following assessment we will discuss a range of options for your child. These may include:

Therapy:

Therapy sessions last approximately 45 minutes.  They will usually involve some direct work with the child as well as demonstration on how to follow up therapy at home.

We will usually set homework to be carried out between sessions, as regular practice helps the child achieve their goals.

Blocks of therapy are usually offered between 4-8 weeks although in some cases longer blocks are advisable.  Following this a period of consolidation is usually recommended before starting further therapy.

Home/School Programmes:

A home/school programme is a pack of targets and activities to be carried out instead of regular therapy sessions. These should be carried out by a parent or someone who knows the child well. It is recommended that regular contact with the therapist is maintained (nb a home/school programme may not be suitable for all children)

Guidance on the cost of therapy is available here. For more information contact us - we are always happy to give advice and support without obligation.
